HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

Founding and Establishment of the College

Peki College of Education formerly known as Peki Training college was originally founded and established as Government Training College in the old Christian town of Peki Avetile on the 12th of February, 1954 with Mr A.F Neal as her first Principal. This explains why the College has retained the acronym GOVCO (short for Government College) till this day. The College was started with thirty (30) men who were admitted to do the 2 Year Certificate ‘A’ Post ‘B’ Course. The institution remained a male only College until 1961 when it was co-educational with the admission of her first batch of twenty-five women. Govco produced her first crop of teachers in 1956, The motto of the college is NIHIL SINNE LABORE translates to “Nothing without Labour” in other words “Success Comes by Hard Work”. In 1965, the college was moved to its present site, overlooking in between the beautiful ranges ‘Wheto’ and “Akpato”.

Evolution and Growth over the Years

The college has undergone various program changes over the years and has maintained a high academic standard since a turnaround in 1998. These are as follow.

Certificate Proogrammes

The college started with a 2-year Certificate ‘A’ Post ‘B’ programme, and has gone through the following programmes since then: 2-year Certificate ‘A’ Post Secondary; 2-year Art Education and Geography Specialist programme; 4-year Certificate ‘A’ Post Middle; 3-year Certificate ‘A’ Post Secondary course, 4-year Certificate ‘A’ programme for untrained teachers. 2-year Modular programme for untrained teachers for a 2-year Post Modular Certificate ‘A’ course,

Diploma in Basic Education programmes:

3-year Post Secondary (Regular); 4-year Untrained Teachers; 2-year Post ‘A’ sandwich. These programmes were introduced in 2004, 2005, and 2006 respectively.

Batchelor of Education (B.Ed.) programmes:

The college commenced with the B.Ed. programmes from 2018. Currently the college is fully running the 4-year Batchelor of Education Degree programmes

Affiliated Universities

The College has been affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) over the years till 2019 when the University of Ghana took the role of Affiliation. Currently the college is affiliated to the University of Ghana and offers a range of B.Ed. teacher education programs.

Accreditation and Recognition

The College is fully accredited and runs accredited programmes and courses.
